In contemporary times, it seems every comic book character receives their own television series or film franchise — and the DC Universe has many more on the way – but this doesn’t guarantee they all become the next sensation. Swamp Thing, being a DC character, debuted in “House of Secrets #92” back in 1971, and throughout the years, the character has been featured in multiple films and TV adaptations, but the 2019 revival is notable for having just one season. It’s a pity, as critic Emma Stefansky from Thrillist remarks, “‘Swamp Thing’ is a rarity that comes off as somewhat miraculous.”
The sole season of “Swamp Thing” presents an origin tale for the creature, as it revolves around Abby Arcane (Crystal Reed) investigating a lethal swamp virus in her hometown of Marais, Louisiana. In her journey, she encounters scientist Alec Holland (Andy Bean) whose demise prompts Arcane to delve deeper into the swamp, leading her to meet a mysterious being. The series features Reed and Bean alongside Derek Mears and Virginia Madsen.
Despite receiving favorable reviews following its premiere, the show was unceremoniously canceled just days after its debut. Although the cancellation was initially linked to executives’ negative perceptions of the series, it likely stemmed from the show losing part of its $40 million tax incentive from North Carolina due to an accounting mistake. Nevertheless, the show achieved a 92% Tomatometer rating and a 75% Popcornmeter rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The series is available for purchase on Amazon Video or Apple TV.
