A new update from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman brings additional insights about Apple’s anticipated foldable iPhone. In his Power On newsletter, Gurman mentions that the foldable iPhone will unfold horizontally, akin to the opening mechanism of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold.
Allegedly, the device will feature an 8-inch display when fully opened, although other sources suggest it could be around 7.8 inches. When folded, it is reported to have a 5.5-inch cover screen as well. In comparison, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 offers an 8-inch display when unfolded and a 6.5-inch cover screen.
Reiterating earlier reports, Gurman states that Touch ID will be integrated into the device rather than Face ID. The Touch ID sensor is expected to be placed within the power button, similar to some previous iPad implementations by Apple. This choice of Touch ID over Face ID may be a tactical decision to reduce costs and make room for other internal components such as the battery.
From a usability standpoint, opting for Touch ID is also logical. Consider this: having Touch ID on the power button allows for user authentication whether the device is opened or closed. If Apple aimed to use Face ID for authentication, it would presumably require placing Face ID sensors on both the interior and exterior of the device.
