Frequent Problems with the iPhone Mail Application Impacting Numerous Users

The Mail application has been a key and highly favored first-party app for iPhone users from Apple for quite some time, but currently, it seems to be malfunctioning. MacRumors highlighted on Thursday that numerous reports are surfacing from various online sources, indicating that iPhone users are facing a completely blank screen when attempting to launch the Mail app.

What’s the situation with the Mail app?

“My [Mail] app stopped functioning after the [iOS 18.5] update,” remarked an exasperated iPhone user in a discussion on Apple’s Support Community forums. “I have uninstalled and reinstalled it, but it tries to open (blank white screen) and crashes consistently.”

Countless comments on a Reddit thread demonstrate that this is not a unique or rare problem. A diverse array of iPhone models is experiencing this issue, dating back to at least the iPhone 12, suggesting it’s likely a software-related problem.

I encountered this issue myself on an iPhone 14 Pro this morning. I tapped the Mail app, and after stalling for a few seconds, the last email I had opened displayed on the screen. Afterwards, the buttons at the top of the app disappeared, the app became unresponsive, and I had to swipe up to get back to the Home screen. After force-closing the app, I attempted to open it again, but I either faced a blank screen or the same freezing problem as before.

Is there a resolution?

Unsure of what else to try, I decided to restart my iPhone. For some reason, that worked, and I can now use the Mail app without issues. This solution also appeared to help some other users who encountered the same bug.

Another user mentioned that they managed to resolve the problem by navigating to Settings > General > Keyboard and turning off features such as Auto-Correction and Smart Punctuation. Unfortunately, none of these solutions seem to offer a lasting fix.

As noted by MacRumors, Apple has not yet recognized the issue. There’s no sign on Apple’s System Status page indicating that the app is facing any problems from Apple’s side. We will continue monitoring the situation for any updates.
