the significant Siri enhancement for Apple Intelligence has been delayed, and it will not be available for several more months. In this context, Apple has collaborated with Google to implement a tailored Gemini model for the Siri overhaul.

Google will launch Personal Intelligence on Android before the iPhone experiences an upgraded Siri. Initially, Personal Intelligence will be accessible in beta in the United States. Subscribers to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra will gain access to the more customized Gemini experience starting next week. At this stage, only personal Google accounts will be part of the initial rollout, while the timeline for Workspace accounts to receive Personal Intelligence remains uncertain. Google indicated in its announcement that Personal Intelligence is also set to be integrated into AI Mode in Search, although further specifics were not provided.

Eligible users can expect to receive an invitation in the app to activate Personal Intelligence. Alternatively, they can navigate to the Settings menu, select Personal Intelligence, and identify the apps from which they wish Gemini to gather information. By default, Personal Intelligence will be disabled, meaning applications will not be connected automatically. Users can enable the feature and determine which apps Gemini is permitted to access. Furthermore, users can utilize temporary chats or regenerate responses without any personalization.

How Personal Intelligence functions

Personal Intelligence will be accessible on Android, iPhone, and the web, and across various Gemini models. This should guarantee a consistent personalized experience across devices. In a whitepaper, Google detailed that Personal Intelligence will entail longer processing times. Gemini will provide quicker responses for requests that do not necessitate personalization. However, Google’s examples and demonstrations mainly highlight the Android experience, which is where personalized AI assistants are most beneficial. Gemini will have the capability to craft intricate responses that incorporate personal data from the user’s Gmail inbox, Google Photos, YouTube, Google Search, and other connected applications. Users can precisely select which apps they permit Gemini to access.

Josh Woodward, Google’s vice president overseeing the Gemini apps, Google Labs, and AI Studio, remarked in a blog post that “ever since linking my apps through Personal Intelligence, my everyday life has become more manageable.” He shared a relatable scenario: while waiting at an auto shop, he realized he was unaware of his minivan’s tire size or license plate. He queried Gemini, and the AI promptly provided suggestions based on information stored in Google Photos from a family vacation. The license plate was sourced from an image in Google Photos, while the car’s specifications were obtained from Gmail.

The executive additionally stated that he’s been receiving “fantastic recommendations” for books, shows, clothing, and travel through Personal Intelligence. In another instance, Gemini employed Personal Intelligence to extract data from Gmail and Google Photos to assist Woodward in organizing a family spring break getaway. The AI “avoided tourist hotspots” by analyzing personal details from the Google apps and proposed an overnight train journey along with board games for entertainment during the trip.
