slasher category and its progression, they are still rather subpar — and often utterly terrible fright films. The films’ most significant, and at times sole, achievement is their archvillain. Like “Halloween’s” psychotic killer, Michael Myers (who drew inspiration from a classic sci-fi western), Vorhees is endowed with various supernatural powers that appear to amplify with each successive installment he features in.
Though he initiates his killing spree as a physically deformed human in the initial films, eventually he perishes and returns as a supernatural entity (or undead), acquiring various extraordinary abilities. Yet even prior to this transformation, Jason displays otherworldly strength that exceeds that of average humans: crushing skulls with his bare hands and hurling 100-pound men through windows as if they were mere toys. On top of that, he possesses an astonishing pain threshold, withstanding axe blows, hangings, and other injuries that would likely prove fatal to typical people.
When you factor in his ninja-like stealth and innovative skill at setting traps and discovering imaginative ways to eliminate unwary teenagers in and around his cherished Crystal Lake campsite, you arrive at the type of creature that horror enthusiasts go wild over. And this doesn’t even depict Jason at his most terrifying and powerful.
