Apple is set to launch the iPhone 17 series on Tuesday, yet last-minute speculations continue to emerge prior to the official event. A new leak reveals the battery capacities for all four iPhone 17 models, which isn’t particularly surprising. Each year, the battery capacities for the upcoming iPhones are leaked ahead of the launch event. Apple never announces these details during the keynote or within the marketing materials on its site. Instead, Apple provides battery life estimates for every new iPhone model. Teardowns of the actual devices verify these rumors a few days following the iPhones’ release. What is unexpected is that the eSIM versions will seemingly contain larger battery cells than the SIM models.
If this latest rumor holds true, the iPhone 17 series will be the first instance where Apple employs distinct battery packs for eSIM and SIM versions of the same iPhone model. Apple rolled out eSIM-only iPhones with the iPhone 14 series in 2022, but this was limited to the U.S. market. iPhones released in other regions included regular SIM slots. Nevertheless, Apple did not utilize the internal space reserved for the SIM card to enhance battery life for the U.S. models. As a result, the eSIM-exclusive and SIM versions of the same iPhone were shipped with identical batteries.
The iPhone 17 series is rumored to introduce an iPhone 17 Air model that takes the place of the iPhone Plus. This ultra-slim Air is anticipated to be available in an eSIM-only variant across more markets. However, the remaining three iPhone 17 models in the lineup are expected to still offer both eSIM and SIM options.
