Bloomberg’s latest leak appears to be precise. Specifically, Apple is set to unveil a reimagined MacBook Pro in late 2026 or early 2027, which will include a touchscreen display, a design element the company has long avoided. “You can merge a toaster and a refrigerator, but those won’t be satisfying for the user,” Tim Cook remarked in 2012 when questioned if Apple intended to combine its tablet and laptop offerings, as Microsoft was preparing to do with Windows 8 devices. A few years prior, the late Steve Jobs expressed a similar sentiment, stating that “touch surfaces don’t desire to be vertical.”
When the initial MacBook Pro models with touchscreen displays are released, Tim Cook’s words will still hold some validity. Apple won’t unify the iPad and MacBook lines into a solitary product. Nonetheless, the MacBook Pro equipped with a touchscreen would resemble laptops sold by many of Apple’s rivals, which already have touchscreen displays.
Conversely, there’s also a conflicting perspective. Apple has been developing toaster-refrigerators for years in both hardware and software. On the hardware front, Apple utilizes the same M-series chips for iPad Air, iPad Pro, MacBook Air, entry-level MacBook Pro, and Vision Pro headsets. In terms of software, iPadOS 26 and macOS 26 render the two operating systems nearly indistinguishable regarding user interface design and user experiences. The sole component lacking in macOS 26 is touch input. Meanwhile, iPadOS 26 makes multitasking appear more similar to that of the Mac. Employing a keyboard dock with the tablet creates an experience akin to that of a MacBook with a touchscreen display.
