Amidst speculations that the forthcoming iPhone 17 cases will incorporate additional loopholes for lanyards, Apple insider Majin Bu is now suggesting a novel material to substitute the unsuccessful FineWoven cases. The insider claims this new case provides a “more technical, less ‘luxury’ feel.”
Despite the insider’s history of sharing several precise leaks, Bu’s track record in predicting Apple’s upcoming announcements is somewhat mixed. This time, the insider states this synthetic fabric will possess four main attributes: Visible textile texture, matte color selections, improved durability compared to FineWoven, and an environmentally friendly objective. Dubbed “TechWoven” in another publication, Majin Bu suspects Apple will adopt a name similar to the unsuccessful FineWoven to market these new cases, and even revealed what seems to be the retail packaging of the accessory.
Among the numerous problems related to FineWoven, the material was prone to scratches and suffered damage upon exposure to liquids. Apple enthusiasts were also dissatisfied with the discontinuation of leather cases. While the company could have opted for vegan leather, it took a completely different route that did not yield favorable results. Last year, Apple chose to emphasize plastic and silicone cases for the iPhone 16 instead of presenting a new material. The company also launched its inaugural Beats protective cases late last year.
Built-in lanyard could be Apple’s marketing strategy this year
What stands out about these rumors is their alignment with another leak suggesting Apple will introduce loopholes for lanyards. Released alongside the AirPods Pro 2, the lanyard loop has gained popularity among fans.
While numerous third-party accessory manufacturers already provide cases that can be secured to a lanyard, Apple is continually exploring new revenue streams. Nevertheless, we won’t have to wait too long to discover the company’s approach for its upcoming iPhone 17 cases. Although I would also favor a new leather variant or options made from vegan leather, perhaps the so-called TechWoven will represent a significant improvement over FineWoven.
The iPhone 17 models are anticipated to be unveiled at an event on September 9, along with new Apple Watch models and the AirPods Pro 3. Currently, the official event date has not yet been verified by Apple, but invitations are expected to be sent out in the next few days.
