Once the feature is launched, you can initiate a group chat by clicking the People icon located in the upper right corner of any new or existing chat. When you invite someone to the conversation, ChatGPT generates a duplicate of your discussion as a new group chat, ensuring your current chats stay confidential. Users can bring in others by sharing a link with as many as twenty participants. Upon joining or creating your first group chat, ChatGPT will prompt you to establish a brief profile, including your name, username, and photo. OpenAI indicates that these group chats are powered by GPT-5.1 Auto, meaning it selects the optimal model based on the prompt and the user’s subscription level.
In group chats, users can interact with ChatGPT through text, images, and file uploads, and can also utilize features such as image generation and dictation. OpenAI specifies that rate limits apply solely to ChatGPT’s responses and not to messages exchanged between users. The company claims it has equipped ChatGPT with enhanced social skills, enabling it to follow the conversational flow and recognize when to be silent or when to contribute.
