OpenAI’s Sora App Rises in Popularity Despite Varied Reviews

Sora app achieved over a million downloads on iPhone within just five days of its September release. This is noteworthy considering that users require a special invite code to begin interacting with the app. Strikingly, even with such a high number of users downloading it, utilizing the video creation tools, and creating freely, the Sora by OpenAI app currently holds a rating of less than three stars — 2.8 stars at the time of writing.

So, if it’s so well-received, why the poor rating? What we can infer from this data, and the significant surge of downloads, is that many individuals genuinely wish to use Sora for content creation, even if just to explore its capabilities. The issue, or the disparity, appears to lie with the unlocked features once the initial excitement fades. First and foremost, you can’t use the app without an invite code, and there are no clear criteria for who receives one apart from OpenAI favoring ChatGPT Pro users. The content limitations can be quite restrictive when you do gain access, unless you’re among the early users. Naturally, we can’t ignore the alternatives, including Veo 3, Wan 2.5, and Runway Gen-3 Alpha. However, with OpenAI looking to integrate Sora into ChatGPT, this combination alone may offer a more accessible option compared to similar solutions.
