Sci-fi films such as “Project Hail Mary” are acclaimed for providing gripping drama supported by credible science. In an article for ScienceNews, molecular biology scientist Tina Hesman Saey and earth science journalist Carolyn Gramling examined the validity of the film’s ideas. Saey states that it could indeed be feasible for microbes like the astrophage to exist in space.
Single-celled life forms can thrive in extreme temperatures and endure high radiation or tremendous pressure. Saey acknowledges, “I am unaware of any organisms capable of surviving both extreme heat and cold, let alone in a vacuum or withstanding Venus’ severe atmospheric pressure and assaults from solar radiation. However, if any life form can manage it, it would be a microbe.”
