However, President Trump aims to enhance that advantage rather than lose it, as outlined in a recently unveiled document titled “America’s AI Action Plan.”
The strategy, as stated in the document, is heavily dependent on “removing bureaucratic obstacles” hindering AI firms. This implies that the government will not impose limits on the speed or extent of AI companies’ progress. Many express concerns that without oversight, an increase in AI could easily result in more scammers and other concerning issues. Nonetheless, Trump argues that excessive regulation of AI could hinder advancement. Instead, he prefers to provide AI companies with as much support as feasible through tax breaks, greater access to data centers (like those essential for powering large language models), and similar measures.
This, undeniably, is a worrisome situation for those advocating for the implementation of more safety regulations to oversee AI. Given the technology’s novelty and lack of regulation, we lack a genuine understanding of its long-term societal impact.
