During a recent getaway, I found myself looking for a soothing, low-pressure sitcom to enjoy during my leisure time. I desired something genuinely amusing, devoid of cringe, and not necessarily striving for critical recognition. Such series are hard to come by these days, with many being average and only a few truly bringing happiness. Nevertheless, Apple TV+’s “Platonic,” featuring Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne, meets the criteria flawlessly. Even with its limited visibility, I opted to check it out and was pleasantly taken aback.
Co-created by Nick Stoller and Francesa Delbanco, “Platonic” hasn’t garnered the same level of attention as Apple’s other original offerings. This sentiment is common among Apple TV+ viewers, who frequently stumble upon shows serendipitously. Personally, I don’t hold Apple accountable for this oversight; it was my fault for missing this delightful comedy.
While it would be advantageous for Apple to promote all of its original series comprehensively, “Platonic” doesn’t need a massive spotlight to elicit great laughs and charm. The show’s second season launches with a flawless 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating, signifying that others have also found and appreciated it. The new season continues with the central pair, portrayed by Rogen and Byrne, navigating midlife hurdles like work, weddings, and crises. Apple’s description notes that they attempt to support one another, but at times “rocks break things.”
Byrne embodies a homemaker and former attorney concentrating on raising her children, while Rogen takes on the role of a bar proprietor coping with a difficult divorce. A Vulture critic commends the series for striking a balance between depth and levity, implying it could have a long run. I concur, as there are few feel-good comedies like this that steer clear of cringe and resonate with a broad audience. If you’re an Apple TV+ subscriber, don’t overlook this enchanting, undervalued treasure.
