Unseen Plastics Contaminating Our Oceans in Massive Amounts

Plastic contamination in the oceans has been an escalating issue for many years, with microplastics recognized as a significant problem. Nevertheless, new findings published in the journal *Nature* have disclosed an even more distressing reality: the existence of nanoplastics, which are particles smaller than one micrometer and undetectable to the naked eye. These nanoplastics are widespread in the ocean, and their prevalence is surprisingly high.

Researchers have faced challenges in identifying nanoplastics because of their tiny size, but recent advancements in technology have enabled their detection. Scientists gathered ocean water samples, evaporated the water, and employed a mass spectrometer to pinpoint the plastic particles by heating the samples and examining the emitted molecules.

The identification of nanoplastics heightens the urgency surrounding plastic pollution concerns. The United Nations along with various organizations have been pressing for solutions to address this crisis. Should effective alternatives to plastic or means of degradation not be established promptly, the situation is expected to worsen significantly.
