hype surrounding the continuous influx of autonomous vehicles emerging globally. While the precise feasibility of these cars supplanting human-operated ones in the future remains debatable, one fact is clear: the aspiration for thoroughfares populated with autonomous cars still has considerable distance to cover. Although these vehicles frequently make news, it is usually for unfavorable reasons. For example, the company maintained its stance that it could still enhance road safety despite recent events, and Waymo finds itself in the news again due to yet another issue.
The most recent in the series of events involving Waymo took place on March 7, 2026, when an autonomous vehicle halted between a pair of train tracks and a railroad crossing arm. Fortunately, the Waymo was unoccupied at that moment, allowing the passing train to proceed without complications. As reported by KXAN, an NBC affiliate in Texas, Waymo issued a statement regarding the incident, mentioning that the warning lights had only just begun to activate.
However, the vehicle indicated that it was unable to decelerate and stop before the arm without the risk of being hit from behind for braking too abruptly. This led the vehicle to come to rest before the crossing, yet beyond the stop arm. The company also stated that the vehicle halted more than 2.5 meters ahead of the train tracks and concluded that it was not in any peril from the train passing by.
