Kevin Feige Suggests Marvel to Reduce Dependence on Cliché Trope in MCU Movies

Despite the conclusion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in recent years, there’s no doubt that Marvel Studios president, Kevin Feige, has made crucial decisions during some of its most critical instances. Characters, both heroes and villains, have come to life through performances by actors that audiences can no longer dissociate from them, while beloved story arcs and events have taken surprising turns that even left comic book devotees astonished at where the narrative went next. For Feige, however, there was one essential principle he insisted the franchise adhere to, revolving around steering clear of a trope that has appeared in most of the films and television productions that ensued.

During a discussion with Rotten Tomatoes, Feige revealed his intention to usher in a fresh era of superhero films and transform the role of women within them. “From the outset of my career, the idea of the damsel in distress felt outmoded, and as we began to produce our own films, we aimed to sidestep that trope –- we sought to avert it as much as we could,” articulated the mastermind behind the MCU.

“We aimed to craft these female characters who were as formidable and as competent as the heroes. Now, as we’ve progressed, that’s become even more evident, to the extent that they stand as the heroes.” This sort of thinking has resulted in some of the franchise’s most memorable moments, and what fans may expect more of going forward, regardless of whether some viewers are pleased with it or not.
