The Energy Information Agency plans to require data centers to disclose energy use details, as reported by Wired. This development follows a letter from Senators Josh Hawley and Elizabeth Warren urging the EIA to gather data on data center energy consumption. The upcoming nationwide survey will be mandatory, though a start date is not yet set. In March, the EIA announced a pilot survey involving 196 companies in Texas, Washington state, and the Washington D.C.-Northern Virginia area, with a second survey starting in April in three other states. EIA chief Tristan Abbey aims to complete these pilot surveys by September before developing the mandatory nationwide survey for data centers.
