Since its 2021 launch, Gizmo, an AI-powered learning platform converting students’ notes into interactive study tools, has reached over 13 million users in 120+ countries, up from 300,000 users noted in a 2023 TechCrunch article.

As user adoption rises, investor interest follows. The company recently announced it secured $22 million in Series A funding.

The funding will expand Gizmo’s engineering and AI teams and increase its U.S. college market presence. Previously, with only seven employees, CEO Petros Christodoulou aims to grow the team to about 30.

This growth aligns with changes in student behavior, as U.S. academic performance hits a low, linked to excessive screen time and reduced attention spans.

With learners drawn to TikTok and YouTube, sustaining engagement is crucial for edtech startups. Gizmo is betting on gamified learning as a solution.

For teens and young adults, Gizmo uses game mechanics like leaderboards, streaks, limited lives for mistakes, and friend challenges to boost engagement.

Other micro-learning platforms like Anki, Quizlet, Nibble, Yuno, and Knowt redirect screen-time into learning. Gizmo’s rapid rise is notable compared to Yuno’s 1 million downloads and Knowt’s 7 million users.

Series A funding, led by Shine Capital, included Ada Ventures, Seek Investments, GSV, and NFX, which led Gizmo’s previous $3.5 million seed round.
