The world’s largest retailer has been accused of behaving like a mob boss. According to a bombshell filing in an ongoing antitrust lawsuit from California, Amazon has been fixing prices, making products cheaper on its platform than at competitors like Walmart, Home Depot, and Chewy. The filing details instances where Amazon forced merchants like Levi Strauss and Allergan to make their products more expensive at other retailers. It also claims Amazon pressured rivals directly, as seen when Home Depot was allegedly made to raise its fertilizer prices to ensure Amazon’s prices were lower. California’s Attorney General Rob Bonta stated, “The company is price fixing, colluding with vendors and other retailers to raise costs for Americans beyond what the market requires.” Amazon denies these charges, insisting on its reputation for low prices. Despite the legal battle, a trial isn’t expected until 2027, leaving time to see how the case unfolds.
