Sam Altman Criticizes Anthropic’s Cyber Model, Mythos: ‘Fear-Based Marketing’

OpenAI and Anthropic continue their rivalry, with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman criticizing Anthropic’s new cybersecurity model during a podcast. He accused the competitor of using fear to exaggerate its product’s capabilities.

Anthropic introduced its Mythos model, recently shared with select enterprise clients, claiming it’s too risky for public release due to potential misuse by cybercriminals. Critics argue this warning is exaggerated.

On the “Core Memory” podcast, Altman suggested Anthropic’s “fear-based marketing” restricts AI accessibility to an elite few. He remarked on using alarmist tactics as a marketing strategy to increase exclusivity: “It’s incredible marketing to claim, ‘We’ve built a bomb, and we’ll sell you a bomb shelter for $100 million.’”

Fear-based marketing is not unique to Anthropic, with much of the AI sector employing scare tactics and hyperbole. Warnings about AI threatening global safety often originate not only from critics but also from those commercializing the technology, including Altman.
