Celebrate Earth Day by keeping your old phone. Smartphones are pivotal in modern technology but contribute significantly to global e-waste. In 2022, 62 million tons of e-waste, with pollutants like lead and mercury, contaminated the environment. While tech relies on 17 rare earth elements, their mining complexity results in geopolitical tension and scarcity. Sadly, only 39% of people recycle electronics, exacerbating waste problems. The amount of e-waste surpasses recycling rates, and less than 1% of rare earth demand is met through recycling. Solutions include reducing new device purchases and supporting refurbish programs and the Right to Repair movement. A shift in consumer habits, especially among young people and advocacy for durable tech, is essential. Our reliance on technology demands responsible usage and disposal to minimize environmental harm.
