Some of the top science fiction films did not initially turn out that way. A creative blunder here and there, and tales of futuristic worlds, apocalyptic landscapes, or distant galaxies might have concluded in a vastly different manner, failing to achieve the recognition we’ve grown fond of. Keeping that in mind, we’ve compiled a fascinating collection of sci-fi films that nearly found themselves on an alternate path entirely. This is the type that could have resulted in them not becoming the beloved hits or cult favorites we acknowledge them as, but instead box-office failures that could not reverse time.
Several films in this compilation came close to wrapping up on more optimistic notes than what we experienced, or with dark and definitive conclusions that audiences found hard to grapple with initially. A number of them are certainly better suited for the film’s DVD extras, or for fans searching YouTube to glimpse what might have been. In the rarest occurrences, an ending that was discarded years ago even re-emerged and returned to the official narrative of the film it was cut from. To kick things off, we’re revisiting the ’90s and an exceedingly brighter conclusion to a grim sci-fi film.
