Apple Launches More Affordable App Store Subscription Option

2 Min Read

Apple is introducing a new way for App Store developers to attract subscribers with lower-priced plans requiring a 12-month commitment. The company announced a subscription option allowing customers to pay monthly while committing to a year-long plan. This model lets developers offer discounted rates for more predictable long-term revenue. This aligns with how developers have marketed their annual subscriptions, often highlighting lower monthly prices for annual plans over monthly ones. Apple’s move formalizes this practice and sets policies on presenting offers to avoid confusing customers about true costs. However, the option won’t be initially available to developers in the U.S. or Singapore. Apple’s ongoing App Store litigation in the U.S. is likely a factor, and Singapore’s strong consumer rules could explain its exclusion. Customers can see payment details and cancellation policies before committing, though monthly payments continue until the subscription term ends even if canceled. Apple will help track payments and send renewal reminders. While offering better subscription deals, the model may lead to unintentional long-term commitments due to auto-renewals. Developers can configure this subscription type in App Store Connect and test in Xcode. The new subscriptions are available globally to users on iOS 26.4 and later, with updates releasing in May.
