Transform Your PS5 into a Linux PC

1 Min Read

A developer has devised a way to run Linux on certain Sony PlayStation 5 consoles. Andy Nguyen recently demonstrated Ubuntu running PC games on a PS5 and has now shared the setup instructions on GitHub. This soft mod doesn’t persist after power downs or restarts, but it enables PC gaming while active. Games such as GTA V with enhanced ray tracing and Spider-Man at 1440p resolution run smoothly on the Linux-enabled PS5. Nguyen uses a patched vulnerability applicable to disc-based PS5s with firmware versions 3.xx or 4.xx, excluding the newer 5.xx. Homebrew and cracked games aren’t supported like with the PS4 exploits. The Linux install features custom VRAM allocation and fan controls, but internet connectivity might require WLAN adapter adjustments post-boot. Resolutions of 1080p, 1440p, and 4K are available at 60Hz, with potential future support for 120Hz or 30Hz. Nguyen is exploring a rest mode feature for relaunching Linux easily. It’s recommended for users familiar with Linux commands, and Nguyen assures there’s no risk of bricking the console. Detailed instructions and support are available on GitHub and Discord.
