Google Photos Uses AI to Bring ‘Clueless’ Iconic Closet to Life

2 Min Read

Google Photos announced a new AI-powered feature that will transform photos of clothes into a digital closet for creating outfit ideas and virtually trying them on. Inspired by Cher’s virtual wardrobe in “Clueless,” this feature will utilize AI to create a replica of your wardrobe based on clothing in your Google Photos library. Users can filter items by category and mix and match to create different outfits. The digital closet concept from “Clueless” symbolized privilege, and the fashion industry has tried to emulate this simplicity in outfit creation. Google aims to make such a tool accessible to everyone, with improvements as AI advances.

Users can share their outfit ideas with friends or save them to a digital moodboard for different occasions. There is also a feature to virtually try on outfits. The feature isn’t live yet, but it will launch on Google Photos for Android and later on iOS under “Collections.” It will compete with apps like Acloset, Combyne, Pureple, and Wearing.

Google didn’t detail how the AI functions, but it will recognize clothing and accessories in your library to create snapshots. High-quality results may require manually photographing clothes, similar to Cher’s method.
