Josh Johnson’s Daily Show Response to SCOTUS Voting Rights Act Ruling is a Must-Watch

The U.S. Supreme Court further dismantled the Voting Rights Act (VRA) on Wednesday with a decision impacting racial discrimination significantly. The conservative majority on the court declared Louisiana’s congressional map, which included two Black-majority districts, to be an “unconstitutional racial gerrymander” and ordered it to be redrawn. As described by the Guardian, the 1965 act has been a crucial protection for minority voters, especially in southern states resisting equal political influence, ensuring Black voters’ rights to fair electoral power. This decision effectively removes that protection.

Josh Johnson from The Daily Show reacted to the ruling in a segment aired on Thursday, which is highly recommended to watch. He commented that the Supreme Court avoided explicitly allowing states to be racist but acknowledged that Justice Samuel Alito mentioned states only breach the VRA if there’s strong evidence they intentionally limited minority voters’ opportunities based on race. Johnson humorously remarked that Alito’s stance suggests a map isn’t considered racist unless its creator openly admits to racism.

Johnson expressed concern that the nation is regressing, contrasting today’s weakening of the legislation from the 1960s’ era of black-and-white TV when people recognized racial injustices and passed protective laws. He concluded by asserting the decision wasn’t about moving beyond race but rather offering a win to Republicans, highlighting this conclusion with a nod to Republican leaders openly acknowledging it.
