Microsoft is introducing a new AI tool in Word aimed at legal professionals. The Legal Agent assists with document editing, tracking negotiation history, and managing complex documents, effectively aiding legal teams in tasks such as contract reviews. Rather than using general AI models for interpretation, the agent employs structured workflows based on legal practice to manage specific and repeatable tasks, such as contract reviews. According to Sumit Chauhan, Microsoft’s Office Product Group VP, the agent can handle existing documents with tracked changes, analyzing agreements to identify risks and obligations. Microsoft’s Legal Agent is available to its Frontier program members in the US and is part of a broader initiative to integrate more agent-like features into Word. This development follows Microsoft’s acquisition of AI experts from Robin AI, an unsuccessful startup focused on AI-driven contract review systems.
