If you can’t beat them, offer a better price.
The creative software industry is challenging Adobe’s dominance. Despite being the standard for years with its Creative Cloud suite, Adobe’s shift to subscriptions and AI integration hasn’t been well-received.
Competitors are exploiting Adobe’s pricing, with some offering free alternatives. People prefer free options.
Autograph, a motion design software similar to Adobe After Effects, was acquired by Maxon last year and is now available free for personal users. Previously, it cost $1,795 for a license or $59 monthly, compared to Adobe’s $34.49 monthly for After Effects. Autograph provides similar animation and VFX tools at no cost.
Coincidentally, Canva has made Cavalry, a motion graphics tool, free after acquiring it, reminiscent of its previous move with Affinity apps. Originally, Affinity Designer 2, Photo 2, and Publisher 2 cost $69.99 each or $169.99 for all, but now they are a single free app.
DaVinci Resolve 21’s update adds photo editing features, competing with apps like Adobe’s Premiere Pro. It also supports Affinity’s file format, enhancing integration with free apps.
Paid Adobe alternatives are also appealing. Apple’s Creator Studio suite offers editing tools for $12.99 monthly, cheaper than Adobe’s $69.99 Creative Cloud Pro. Apple still allows buying individual app licenses without a subscription, challenging Adobe.
In discussions, Apple’s lower pricing surprised many compared to Adobe’s. They noted the need for a Lightroom alternative in Apple’s suite, which DaVinci temporarily fills.
These recent developments, along with existing free or non-subscription software, pose a serious challenge to Adobe.
Procreate stands against AI, offering acclaimed illustration and animation tools for iPad with a one-time purchase. It’s expanding to Mac desktops.
Blender continues adding features and has been used in Oscar-winning productions. Figma’s success led Adobe to attempt a failed acquisition, as Figma provides a free tier.
Escaping Adobe’s ecosystem seems feasible, with freedom becoming increasingly free.
