As CEO, Tim Cook has expertly guided Apple through challenging political situations. Though he is stepping down as CEO to become Apple’s executive chairman, he will continue his crucial role as the company’s key liaison with President Donald Trump. In this new position, Cook will focus on managing Apple’s political relationships, particularly with Trump.
Throughout his career, Cook has skillfully balanced Apple’s interests in China with U.S. policy concerns and maintained a working relationship with Trump that has benefited the company, such as obtaining exemptions from certain tariffs. Despite occasional awkward moments, like Trump’s inaccurate claims during a factory tour or presenting Trump with symbolic gifts, Cook’s efforts have generally been successful.
However, Cook’s charm hasn’t always prevailed. Under Biden, the Justice Department has pursued an antitrust lawsuit against Apple, which continues under Trump’s administration. Although Apple won a legal battle with Epic Games, it faced criticism for its actions regarding the App Store. Moreover, Apple hasn’t entirely avoided tariffs, which could result in significant financial costs.
As John Ternus takes over as CEO, Apple faces various policy challenges, including global AI regulation efforts and app store verification requirements. Fortunately, Cook will still be involved to address these issues.
