Who is John Ternus, Apple’s new CEO?
John Ternus is set to become Apple’s next CEO. While Tim Cook was praised for his logistics approach, Ternus’ background is in product development. Previously Apple’s SVP of hardware engineering, Ternus has been prominent in product announcements, such as the iPhone Air in 2025 and the first Macs with Apple Silicon in 2020. At 50, with 25 years at Apple, he’s now leading everything.
Ternus’ career at Apple started in 2001 with the product design team after working as a mechanical engineer at Virtual Research Systems. His first manager, Steve Siefert, described him as “a man of the people,” preferring to work alongside his team. He became VP of hardware engineering in 2013 and SVP in 2021, succeeding Dan Riccio.
Under his leadership, Apple’s product lineup has transformed. Ternus oversaw the development of AirPods, transitioned iPhones to USB-C, redesigned the MacBook Air, revamped the iPad Pro, and launched the Vision Pro. A foldable iPhone is rumored for release this fall. Some of his projects, like the Touch Bar and butterfly keyboard, weren’t as successful.
Ternus has taken on more responsibilities, becoming the executive sponsor of Apple’s design team and overseeing the robotics team. In October, he gained control of Apple Watch hardware engineering. He has also focused on sustainability, leading innovations in materials to reduce Apple’s carbon footprint.
As CEO, Ternus follows Steve Jobs and Tim Cook in steering the company. Apple reportedly has new products in development, such as smart home hardware, a Siri revamp, OLED MacBook Pros, and smart glasses. From September 1st, Ternus will be responsible for these and Apple’s future.
