Recently, Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism implemented a new regulation that prohibits the use of portable power banks on flights to and from the country. According to the new rule, effective April 24, 2026, portable power banks can no longer be utilized on airplanes: either for charging devices or being connected to the aircraft for power. This regulation may appear stringent, but the ministry made this decision following multiple incidents where these devices either “ignited or began emitting smoke aboard aircraft,” as reported by NHK World-Japan.
