Microsoft reported Wednesday that usage and engagement are rising for its AI tool, Copilot, integrated into M365 apps like Word, Excel, and Outlook. There are now 20 million paid enterprise Copilot seats, according to CEO Satya Nadella during the company’s quarterly earnings call. The number of companies paying for over 50,000 seats has quadrupled, with Bayer, Johnson & Johnson, Mercedes, and Roche holding more than 90,000 seats each. A recent notable agreement includes Accenture acquiring over 740,000 seats, marking Microsoft’s largest Copilot win thus far.

Nadella assured that Copilot’s usage is comparable to email engagement, as Copilot queries per user increased nearly 20% from the previous quarter. Weekly engagement with Copilot is comparable to Outlook, highlighting its intense adoption.

He specified that Copilot doesn’t rely on a single model like OpenAI. Users can access multiple models, including Anthropic’s Claude, with intelligent auto-routing in chat agents. During the earnings call, Morgan Stanley’s Keith Weiss mentioned the impressive Copilot statistics surpass expectations.

Microsoft has made Agent mode the default experience across Copilot in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The company recently released Copilot’s agentic capabilities, allowing multi-step actions in documents, presenting a new method for delegation and task completion using Copilot, according to Nadella.
