  • The brand Dreame has introduced its take on living without a garbage disposal with an electric countertop “composter alternative.” Though it doesn’t create compost, it efficiently prevents kitchen odors by drying and condensing food, an especially handy feature in small spaces like apartments. I paused using my Mill food recycling bin to test the Dreame S25P Food Waste Disposer for two weeks.

The Dreame food waste disposer is slim and stylish, contrasting with competitors like the Lomi 3 and Food Cycler, which are more obviously appliance-like. Dreame’s device, with its minimalist beige rectangle design, may appeal to those who prefer subtle countertop appliances. I experimented with its placement in my kitchen to assess its versatility.

For an appliance, the Dreame disposer blends well with decor and has the aesthetic appeal to reside harmoniously on a styled flat surface near the kitchen, even if counter space is limited. Dreame’s design is slightly smaller than the Lomi 3, with an orientation suited for tight spaces, similar to a Ninja Slushi.

One of the smartest design features is the top-front control panel, convenient for tight counter spaces. The Dreame disposer can also be stored in a cabinet or pantry but wouldn’t be immediately accessible when needed.

The lid opening process requires two taps, prompting a wake-up and open action. The touchscreen-like buttons can be inconvenient when hands are full. The device also narrates actions, which can be unnecessarily loud.

What can go in the Dreame food waste disposer?

Dreame permits a variety of food waste, including fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, eggshells, grains, small bones, and fibrous foods. Dairy isn’t officially approved, though I’ve successfully disposed of cheese. Compliance with local compost regulations may vary, such as restrictions on meat and dairy attracting pests.

In cities with mandatory food separation rules, like San Francisco, Seattle, and New York City, the Dreame disposer simplifies the process and fits well in small apartments. For those with curbside or community composting services, adherence to their accepted materials is required.

You’ll barely know this thing is running

The Dreame disposer runs quietly, processing scraps into a smaller, odor-free dirt pile. Despite its lower capacity compared to rivals, it’s adequately-sized for small households. Dreame’s Amazon listing misleadingly labels it as an electric composter, while it should emphasize kitchen waste reduction features.
