Microsoft might be developing a disc-to-digital conversion for Xbox games. The company is reportedly expanding its Xbox Game Pass subscription service to China, referred to as “Project Saluki.” This project aims at “China market expansion for Game Pass, Rewards, and subscription tiers,” despite Xbox Game Pass not currently being available in China. Microsoft does sell Xbox consoles there and initially launched the Xbox One in 2014, following a long-standing government ban on game consoles. The Chinese Xbox store offers a limited selection of games due to regulatory approvals, complicating previous plans to introduce Xbox Game Pass. Project Saluki may present a tailored game selection for China. Microsoft’s Xbox PC app features another codename, Positron, which could “enable Disc2Digital.” This concept might revive the earlier plan to convert physical disc games into digital formats, a strategy Microsoft abandoned for the Xbox One due to opposition from publishers and resellers. Speculation suggests Positron could relate to Project Helix for Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox console. The shift towards discless consoles has been evident, as seen with the all-digital Xbox Series S in 2020 and a discless Xbox Series X in 2024.
