Microsoft is significantly reducing the disruption caused by Windows Update.
Microsoft is focused on enhancing Windows 11, particularly by refining the troublesome Windows Update system. Users will soon have the option to pause updates indefinitely, and there will be a new feature that automatically reverts any problematic drivers installed via Windows Update.
A new feature, “Cloud-Initiated Driver Recovery,” has been developed by Microsoft to automatically replace faulty drivers with previously functioning ones through Windows Update. Currently, users need to manually roll back drivers or rely on hardware vendors to issue fixes, but this feature will automate the process.
“When a driver is identified as having quality issues during our shiproom evaluation process, Microsoft can now initiate a recovery action from the cloud, replacing the problematic driver on affected devices without requiring manual intervention from the user or the hardware partner,” explains Garrett Duchesne, principal program manager at Microsoft.
This update is currently undergoing testing with Microsoft’s hardware partners and is expected to start rolling out in September gradually. Additionally, Microsoft is working on making Windows updates less intrusive, allowing users to extend pause dates, bypass updates during initial device setup, and opt to restart or shut down a PC without installing pending updates.
