Uber is expanding its presence in India with new engineering campuses and a data center partnership to support its product development and infrastructure. The company is planning to open two new campuses accommodating about 9,600 people in Bengaluru and Hyderabad by 2027, adding to its current operations in these software and engineering hubs. Additionally, Uber has partnered with Adani Group to establish its first data center in India, set to be operational by late 2026. These announcements came during Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi’s recent visit to India.

Uber employs around 3,500 people in India and plans to hire more technical talent, focusing on AI, machine learning, autonomous vehicles, and infrastructure. India is a key base for tech companies due to its skilled workforce, and Uber’s expansion aims to find growth beyond ride-hailing, investing in AI and autonomous technologies. Earlier this year, Uber invested $330 million into its Indian unit to strengthen its position in the country.

The Indian market, however, poses challenges due to fierce price competition, supply issues, high driver incentives, and regulatory changes that sometimes disrupt services. Uber also faces competition from local firms like Rapido, which has surpassed Ola as Uber’s main rival in India, according to Khosrowshahi. Nevertheless, India remains a crucial engineering and infrastructure hub for Uber’s global operations as demand for AI expertise and computing capacity rises.
