Microchip’s LAN878x 100BASE-T1 and LAN888x 1000BASE-T1 Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) PHY transceivers are crafted for secure, scalable, and deterministic Ethernet connectivity across automotive, avionics, robotics, and industrial sectors.

Microchip’s SPE solutions were first observed in 2023 with the LAN8650/LAN8651 10BASE-T1S and LAN8770 100BASE-T1 transceivers, followed by launches like the LAN887x industrial Single Pair Gigabit Ethernet transceivers. The recent LAN878x/LAN88x models bring MACsec support along with Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) and Functional Safety (FuSa).

Key specifications for these transceivers include:
– Standards and port speed:
– LAN878x: IEEE 802.3bw, 100BASE-T1
– LAN888x: IEEE 802.3bp, 1000BASE-T1
– MACsec compliance to IEEE 802.1AE-2018 (M Version Only)
– Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) support
– Host interface (varies per SKU): SGMII (Serial Gigabit Media Independent Interface) or RGMII (Reduced Gigabit Media Independent Interface)
– OPEN Alliance TC10 support / wake-up support
– IEEE 802.1AS-2020, 802.1AS-2011 compliance
– ASIL B Functional Safety Ready with enhanced diagnostics
– Package: 40-pin (6 x 6 mm) VQFN
– Temperature Range: -40 to +125°C (AEC-Q100 Automotive Grade 1 temperature range)

Available SKUs: LAN8781, LAN8782, LAN8881, LAN8882, LAN8883, LAN8884, with M variants supporting MACsec security.

These PHY transceivers are compatible with hardware evaluation platforms, SGMII, USB, and PCIe plug-in boards, and have Linux software driver support. Notable models include the LAN8781M EDS2 Daughter Card with 100BASE-T1 PHY and MACsec, and the LAN8881M EDS2 Daughter Card with 1000BASE-T1 PHY and MACsec.

The LAN878x and LAN888x series are currently sampling, although pricing details for the chips and daughter cards have yet to be disclosed. Further details can be accessed on the product page and through the press release.
