“Is God Is” is an electrifying feature directorial debut from playwright-turned-filmmaker Aleshea Harris. It delivers filmmaking that is mythic, mesmerizing, and menacing—one of the best movies of 2026. Harris’ thriller weaves inspiration from Greek mythology, Black culture, and Quentin Tarantino films to create something reverential yet fresh. Producers Tessa Thompson and Janicza Bravo support Harris’ bold vision, along with a riveting cast including Kara Young, Mallori Johnson, Janelle Monáe, Erika Alexander, Vivica A. Fox, and Sterling K. Brown.

“Is God Is” is a road trip movie with a Southern-fried edge. It centers on Black twin girls, Racine and Anaia, scarred by a domestic violence incident in their childhood. They learn their mother Ruby (Fox) is alive, and she wants them to make their daddy dead. The twins are torn by this directive—Racine eager for revenge and Anaia hesitant to uproot their life.

The film’s journey features dynamic performances, powerful dialogues, and moral dilemmas, culminating in a tense showdown with their father. Brown’s character is a terrifying presence throughout the film. The film’s passion, style, and compelling storytelling leave a lasting impact. “Is God Is” is a scorching thriller that feels like a cinematic miracle. “Is God Is” opens in theaters on May 15.
