**Spider-Man: Homecoming’s Director Had A Concept For An Unforeseen Guardians Of The Galaxy Spin-Off**

Through the years, segments of the [Marvel Cinematic Universe](https://www.bgr.com/entertainment/the-ultimate-marvel-cinematic-universe-guide/) have appeared and disappeared, with notable characters either meeting their end or not receiving the level of focus fans might have hoped for. One such individual was Rhomann Dey, a Xandarian who, in the comic books, appointed Richard Rider as the new Nova, a key cosmic hero in the Marvel realm.

In the films, Dey was featured in “Guardians of the Galaxy” in 2014, portrayed by Oscar-nominated John C. Reilly. Although his role wasn’t extensive, there was sufficient depth to the character for “Spider-Man: Homecoming” director Jon Watts, who sought to elevate this relatively minor appearance.

As disclosed in [“The Story of Marvel Studios,”](https://store.abramsbooks.com/products/the-story-of-marvel-studios) Watts was invited by the studio, which set in motion his involvement with the web-slinging hero in 2017. However, during the initial phases, Watts had alternative ideas he was eager to discuss after viewing “Guardians” and Dey, which piqued his interest. “‘What is his life like? What does the ground level of this wild Marvel Cinematic Universe look like?'” Watts reminisced. “That’s more in line with what I’m drawn to as a filmmaker, aiming for a more grounded approach and telling truly low-key personal narratives. So I didn’t think I’d ever have the chance at [Marvel Studios’] level.” Although it may have been almost ten years since that film, speculative plans for the MCU indicate that we might still encounter Dey in due time.

**Nova has been adrift in the cosmos attempting to enter the MCU**

Currently, Xandar hasn’t been observed since 2017, and its condition certainly isn’t favorable, considering that Thor in “Avengers: Infinity War” mentioned Thanos had “decimated” the planet to acquire the Power Stone. As far as we know, the Nova Corps has been disbanded, yet that hasn’t prevented rumors that Nova will eventually be active again. In 2024, it was disclosed that intentions were set for a “Nova” Disney+ series centering on the aforementioned Richard Rider (via [Deadline](https://deadline.com/2024/12/ed-bernero-marvel-nova-showrunner-1236205019/)).

Marvel Studios TV head, Brad Winderbaum, even verified this, stating during the [Phase Zero](https://youtu.be/EN8oeJ0tnpg) podcast at the time, “So, plans are underway to develop Nova. I’m a fan of Nova as well. I’m fond of Rich Rider, too. I hope it becomes a reality. You see, the world is chaotic. There are always challenges. It’s tough to bring anything to fruition; you need to somehow make these things happen, but I would love to see a Nova series someday.” Marvel Studios head, Kevin Feige, similarly informed [ComicBook](https://comicbook.com/movies/news/marvels-kevin-feige-confirms-nova-project-is-a-tv-show-reveals-timeline-for-release-exclusive/) at that time, “It’s nearly three or four years away.”

Regrettably, after reviewing our calendars, it appears we are drawing nearer to Feige’s previously mentioned three-year timeline, and there remains no indication of Rider or the return of Rhomann Dey. For the time being, we should merely await the likes of [“Spider-Man: Brand New Day”](https://www.bgr.com/2126238/tom-holland-spider-man-brand-new-day-first-trailer/) and [“Avengers: Doomsday”](https://www.bgr.com/2134069/avengers-doomsday-marvel-details-updates/) to clear the path, and we could potentially see a brand new Dey, after all.
