“Euphoria” fans are abuzz with a grim theory due to the show’s latest cliffhanger.
In Season 3, episode 5, Rue Bennett (Zendaya) seems in peril. Alamo Brown (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) suspects Rue of being a snitch, leading to a grim scene where she’s forced to dig her own grave. She’s buried up to her neck by Alamo’s men before Alamo charges toward her on horseback, ready to deliver a deadly blow.
Despite the suspense, there’s little chance “Euphoria” would kill off its Emmy-winning star at this point. The panic over Rue’s fate stems partly from her absence in the episode 6 trailer and parallels with the Israeli version of “Euphoria,” where a similar character dies and narrates posthumously. Yet, while Rue’s Israeli counterpart dies of an overdose, Rue’s situation involves a cowboy conflict in the U.S. version.
Evidence from a Season 3 trailer released on March 30 shows Rue alive, having survived Alamo’s attack. She warns Laurie (Martha Kelly) about Alamo’s threat, and scenes in the trailer, not yet aired, involve Rue’s conversations with Ali (Colman Domingo) and a vision of a burning tree. This confirms she isn’t dead yet.
The manner in which Rue escapes Alamo’s threat remains unknown. Whether Alamo’s actions are scare tactics or Rue’s resilience comes into play, both Rue and Zendaya are not leaving “Euphoria” soon.
New episodes of “Euphoria” Season 3 air Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max.
