Google unveils new AI features and laptop brand at a recent event. Google’s Android Show: I/O Edition, which occurred ahead of the Google I/O 2026 on May 19, spotlighted Android updates. Historically, Google I/O focused on Android developments, but now, these announcements are made earlier to emphasize artificial intelligence at the main event.
Key highlights include the introduction of the Googlebook, a new category of laptops designed in collaboration with Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Acer. Although the hardware details were scarce, the Googlebook is likened to the Chromebook, tailored for the Gemini era. A standout feature is Magic Pointer, an AI-enabled cursor that suggests actions based on what you hover over, such as scheduling meetings from email dates. Additionally, Googlebooks can run Android phone apps without additional downloads or poor touchscreen imitation. They feature a “Glowbar” on the back that illuminates with Google’s colors.
Android Auto sees enhancements with Material 3 Expressive design integration, customizable widgets, improved Google Maps with 3D views, and Gemini contextual features like voice-activated DoorDash orders and AI-backed task information. YouTube’s full HD, 60fps playback in parked vehicles is also introduced.
Gemini Intelligence expands to the latest Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel devices, providing advanced AI functionalities. The features optimize various tasks, such as booking classes based on images and automating form completions. Gemini’s Rambler tool and Create My Widget offer further AI-driven conveniences.
Chrome for Android integrates image generation via Nano Banana, real-time parking spot location with SpotHero, and webpage summarization through the Gemini icon.
The event underscores Google’s shift towards AI-centric innovations, preparing for more advancements at the main Google I/O conference.
