Roku has finally introduced cloud DVR support with one of its latest updates. In February, Roku also commenced trials for a revamped home screen layout. In a similar context, Roku launched Roku OS 15.2, which aims to enhance the user experience even further, though its main focus is on developers crafting content for the platform, particularly apps and services. These modifications will create a snowball effect, significantly transforming some of the most aggravating aspects of Roku’s ecosystem.
The concrete advantages of the update will become increasingly visible and widespread as developers leverage the new features. Roku’s Perfetto-based app tracing tool has been enhanced, enabling developers to “visualize the BrightScript heap graph to inform [them] which SceneGraph and BrightScript objects consume the most memory.” It also broadens the BrightScript APIs with low-memory event alerts, remote control-related data, and includes support for AES-GCM encryption ciphers.
The revised information monitors will enable developers to identify which app processes are consuming more system resources, such as memory, allowing them to minimize and optimize for leaner services. This should translate into smoother navigation, quicker app launches, more stable video playback, and reduced app crashes. Significant frustrations encountered while using Roku devices arise from sporadic freezes, sluggish navigation across menus, and delayed responses resulting in repeated and unnecessary button presses. These performance enhancements should address many of those issues.
