The Motorola Razr Fold Impresses, but Struggles to Outshine Competitors

2 Min Read

There are numerous excellent foldables available now. During my initial testing of the new Motorola Razr Fold, priced at $1,900, it offers what you’d expect from a book-style foldable: comfort, high-quality displays, and a substantial battery. Yet, I found myself leaning towards last year’s Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and the anticipated iPhone Fold.

Initial impressions suggest the Razr Fold is a competent device amid strong competition. Positives include comfort, user-friendliness, impressive displays, and robust performance from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset. However, drawbacks involve its thickness compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and a high price, along with a battery issue in my unit.

Key Specifications:
– Processor: Snapdragon 8 Gen 5
– Battery: 6,000mAh
– Displays: 6.6-inch pOLED (165Hz) / 8.1-inch LTPO OLED (120Hz) with HDR10+
– Cameras: 50MP wide, 50MP ultrawide, 50MP telephoto, 20MP inner, 32MP cover
– Charging: 80W wired, 50W wireless, reverse wireless
– AI Tools: Google Gemini, Perplexity, Moto AI, Microsoft Copilot
– Brightness: 6,200 nits
– Price: $1,899.99

The Razr Fold feels nice but falls short of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 from last year, which was markedly thinner and lighter. At 243g and 9.89mm folded, the Razr Fold is bulkier in comparison, despite still being comfortable to use with smooth performance in limited testing.

Both displays excel, with the 8.1-inch AMOLED inner screen and 165Hz outer display providing a top viewing experience. Multitasking features perform well, offering intuitive app management.

It’s unclear if the Razr Fold’s unique features offer a competitive edge. Notably, the battery is much larger at 6,000mAh, potentially providing longer life than the 4,400mAh Z Fold 7. However, current testing is hindered by a charging issue in the review unit, though this isn’t expected to be a widespread problem.

The Razr Fold supports the Moto Pen Ultra stylus, offering an official accessory option that can be appealing for users seeking such functionality, unlike the Z Fold 7, which dropped official S Pen support.

As a solid foldable phone with no immediate significant flaws pending resolution of the charging issue, the Motorola Razr Fold’s position is challenging due to established competitors and the expectation of future high-quality entries from other companies.

The Motorola Razr Fold is available for order in the U.S. from Motorola and Best Buy for $1,899.99.
