A recent survey reveals that 71 percent of Americans disapprove of data centers, mainly due to concerns over their water and electricity consumption. The poll conducted by Gallup shows a strong opposition to constructing AI data centers locally, with only 7 percent expressing strong support. Remarkably, Americans would rather live near a nuclear plant, which once faced 63 percent opposition at its height. The survey, involving 1,000 randomly chosen adults in March 2026 and 2,054 Gallup Panel members in April, highlights resource impact concerns as a leading issue for 50 percent of opponents. A Pew Research survey correlates this sentiment, with 43 percent attributing rising power bills significantly to data centers. Opposition is most pronounced among Democrats (75 percent), followed by independents (74 percent), and Republicans (63 percent). Other significant concerns include quality of life, cost of living, pollution, and negative AI perceptions. Supporters, however, cite job creation as a primary benefit, a stance echoed by Maine Governor Janet Mills in her veto of a data center construction moratorium.
