Saturday Night Live wrapped up its Season 51 finale over the weekend, with former cast member Will Ferrell hosting the show for the sixth time. Before Ferrell could begin hosting, Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers attempted to steal the spotlight. Smith took the stage first, pretending to be Ferrell. This played into the ongoing joke about the resemblance between Ferrell and Smith, the Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer, which SNL highlighted in its final season episode.
After Smith greeted the audience, Ferrell appeared, dressed identically to Smith, and claimed that Smith had attacked him backstage in a bid to take over. Ferrell managed to persuade Smith to leave the stage, though he acted thrown off by the situation, struggling to resume his hosting role. To regain composure, Ferrell opted to take questions from the audience, with the first question coming from a surprising guest, Sir Paul McCartney.
McCartney humorously accused Ferrell of being the impostor Chad Smith and insisted that Ferrell return to his supposed place at the drum set.
