Formal methods, a segment of mathematics and computer science, focus on confirming system correctness and have long promised a sturdier software foundation. Despite their potential, complexity has limited their usage to specialists. This scenario is shifting with agentic AI systems assuming more autonomous roles. The need to define, enforce, and verify agent capabilities has become pressing, and automated reasoning is now seen as an essential solution.
Byron Cook, a VP and Distinguished Scientist at AWS, is also a professor at University College London and a DARPA program manager. Over ten years ago, he founded AWS’s Automated Reasoning Group, laying the groundwork for products like IAM Access Analyzer, VPC Reachability Analyzer, and Bedrock Guardrails.
