Google is re-entering the smart glasses arena. During Google I/O on Tuesday, the company revealed a collaboration with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster to create a new series of AI-driven glasses. These devices are designed to connect to Android and iOS devices and were co-developed with Samsung. They are expected to be released later this year.
Named “audio glasses” by Google, these devices will allow users to perform tasks through verbal commands using Google’s app and service ecosystem, such as Gemini.
Users can interact with the glasses by speaking directly to them. A demonstration showed a user ordering coffee online using voice commands via the glasses.
Google has experimented with smart glasses multiple times, famously launching Google Glass, which led to the term “glassholes.”
The smart glasses landscape has evolved since then, with major companies like Meta, alongside various startups, investing in this area.
