Why read classics when you can play them? Character.AI, amid controversy over chatbot interactions with users, introduces “Books” mode for structured roleplay. This mode aims to broaden AI roleplay beyond controversial interactions. “Books” launches with over 20 public domain classics from Project Gutenberg, allowing users to assume roles within narratives. Users can play in “book arc mode” for a traditional experience or “off-script mode” for more freedom. An upcoming “TapTale” mode will offer guided experiences with prompts. Users can remix classic stories into new settings, sharing and exploring alternative universes. “Books” is available through Character’s app or Labs, with limited free turns. It’s uncertain if minors will access guided features in “Books,” as Character has faced legal action and restrictions on chat features for those under 18, previously launching structured “Stories.”
