Google is reportedly interested in Elon Musk’s idea of AI data centers in space and is in talks with SpaceX to develop the concept. The Wall Street Journal reports that Google is negotiating with SpaceX to launch rockets with the aim of setting up data centers in orbit. SpaceX recently acquired Musk’s AI company, xAI, with data centers in space being a significant aspect of the acquisition. SpaceX has contacted the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to launch a large number of satellites for this purpose. This initiative aligns with Google’s past announcement of Project Suncatcher, which aims to deploy prototype satellites by 2027 to eventually scale machine learning in space. Google CEO Sundar Pichai has shared the company’s interest in orbital data centers, echoing Musk’s vision due to energy constraints on Earth. SpaceX is set to partner with companies like Anthropic to utilize xAI’s data centers in Tennessee, with plans for future space developments. A partnership with Google could also support SpaceX’s upcoming $1.75 trillion IPO.
