GoPro Launches Cinematic 8K Camera Series Mission 1

2 Min Read

GoPro has introduced its Mission 1 Series, featuring 8K cameras tailored for prosumers, professionals, and content creators. Known for their action cameras, GoPro has shifted focus to videographers seeking a durable device capable of cinematic results. The announcement of the Mission 1 Series comes as a surprise, with many expecting a new Hero 14 Black. GoPro’s latest Hero release, the Hero 13 Black, dates back to 2024, following a break in their annual cycle. Although GoPro’s VP of hardware, Clark Weber, emphasizes the company’s commitment to action cameras, the spotlight is currently on broadening their reach to filmmakers, vloggers, and podcasters.

“There’s a demand for higher quality,” Weber told Mashable. This demand is addressed with the flagship GoPro Mission 1 Pro. Its standout features include a 50MP one-inch sensor for enhanced low-light performance, the new GP3 processor featuring AI capabilities, and the ability to shoot at various resolutions and speeds. The camera promises three hours of recording at 4K 30fps with proper airflow and is waterproof up to 20 meters.

Additionally, the Mission 1 Pro ILS offers a mirrorless setup with interchangeable lenses, appealing to serious filmmakers. However, it’s weatherproof, not waterproof. The entry-level Mission 1 rounds out the series, offering more limited resolution options. Complementing the cameras is GoPro’s Wireless Mic System, which serves as a competitor to DJI’s solutions. The system offers comparable features to the DJI Mic 2, though with a shorter range and no groundbreaking innovations.

Pricing remains unannounced, but the products target prosumer to professional users at an accessible price. Pre-orders for the Mission 1 Pro and Mission 1 open on May 21, with availability starting on May 28. The Mission 1 Pro ILS becomes available from Q3 2026.

Facing tough competition and recent financial losses, GoPro aims to broaden its audience appeal with the Mission 1 Series.
